MANAGING MILLENNIAL AT WORKPLACE: A FRAMEWORK TO IMPROVING MOTIVATION AND RETENTION

Abstract


Presently, the workplace has been seeing a domination in the number of The Generation Y or better known as The Millennials. The unique characteristics of Millennials greatly influence their nature and behaviour as well as their work ethics. Raised in a global condition that provides extensive kinds of facilities and were educated by parents who always fulfil all their needs, making them labelled as a generation that is lazy, disloyal, has no commitment toward work, and having lacks of motivation. Companies must begin to pay more attention to managing Millennials, if they want them to bring positive changes for the company. Companies must be able to adapt and create a suitable work environment to meet the needs of millennial workers if they do not want to lose them. This article aims to explain more about the characteristics and stereotypes inherent in millennials, and suggesting that management style may be the key to successfully leveraging millennial employees’ talent. The method used is a literature study of various references to find the right approaches to deal with the issue corresponding with the millennial generation in the workplace. Transformational leadership style, leadership training, mentoring, knowledge sharing, and flexibility and casualty in the workplace can increase employee motivation and retention, especially The Millennials.
